2014 Cup Run: Round 1, Game 1

Okay sports fans, here we go. A game-by-game, day-by-day, review of the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs.

We begin today, Sunday August 3, with the first game between the LA Kings and their rivals from the north, the San Jose Sharks.

As mentioned in our last posting, there are a variety of ways folks can re-experience the games, with recaps at NHL.com or throughout the web.

You likely already know, things don’t start off so great for our Kings–indeed it’s unlikely they could have begun the playoffs any worse. So you’ll have to keep that in mind as our texts go from upset, to frustrated, to outraged, to despondent.

But that’s the beauty of the highs and lows of sports, and we now present the text thread from Game 1, April 17, in San Jose. We try to include time of texts as well so folks can follow what we are reacting to. [With some edits for more sensitive readers]

Not enough offense:

JESUS ____ING CHRIST

Keith:

Insult to injury.

Sean:
We are being dismantled.

Keith:
I want to start this day over.

Sean:
Third breakaway for the Sharks. Don’t know how many 2 on 1s.

Keith:
Are we sure we gave up the fewest goals this month?

Year I mean?

9:24pm

Sean:
____ this game. Just ____ the game. ____ the lack of effort. ____ the blown defensive coverage. ____ the complete lack of offensive creativity or push. ____ this game.

Keith:

Can we just wipe the slate and start brand new next game?

Sean:
Absolutely. That’s Sutter’s philosophy. Park and ride.

9:45pm

Keith:
Thank you.

Just that goal was all I asked.

10:10pm

Sean:
Alright.
