2014 Cup Run: Round 1, Game 2

Oof.

Seeing a replay of Game 2 in the Sharks-Kings first round matchup is brutal for a Kings fan. It’s hard to say which game was tougher to watch on its own–the first or the second. But knowing the Sharks were already up 1-0 in the series, and seeing the glimmer of hope in this one before the Kings crashed so spectacularly, made Game 2 even more painful.

Truly the depths of despair. A dark day (or night) in Los Angeles history.

As you can see from the text message thread between Sean and Keith below, we were quite despondent after this game. (We relive some of this in an upcoming podcast episode as well.)

Little did we know, it was all uphill from here (though gradually).

[Pre-game]

10:43am

Sean:
Expect a monster game from Kopitar. Expect Jeff Carter in the slot. Expect Dustin Brown to hit anything that moved. Expect Quick to shut the door. Expect victory.

Keith:
Expect San Jose to just shrivel up?

Sean:

Expect them to fight like lions. But expect them to lose.

Keith:
Predicted score?

Sean:

18-2, Kings.

At the end of the first

Keith:

That’s the spirit. We need to come out and sock them in the mouth.

[Game time]

7:12pm

Sean:

Carter Richards and Brown. You love it.

Keith:

I do. Just tuned in what happened.

Sean:
Kings dominance.

Quick is looking great. Gotta get one more before the end of this period.

8:21pm

Keith:

Spoke too soon.

Sean:

That was blown coverage by Martinez.

8:34pm

Sean:

And I’m done.

Keith:

I’m an official jinx of the Kings.

9:13pm

Keith:

What the hell is the matter with us?! Have we forgotten line changes?!

Sean:

I’ve stopped watching. I’m going to bed. This is ____ing bull____.

April 21

Keith:
This might have ruined my 2014.

Sean:

There’s still two games left. Don’t lose hope.

Keith:

Who is our Obi Wan? Kopitar was a minus three.

Sean:

Oh, no one is going to help. We are absolutely going to lose this series. Our only hope is to go down with dignity.

Keith:
Now YOU stop that pessimistic talk! Remember the Blues.

Sean:
With the Blues series, at least we were in both of the first games. We played characteristic Kings games and got edged by a good team. This time around, it’s completely unexplainable.

Keith:

Unfathomable. We will never hear the end of this two game debacle from San Jose, even if we win the next four games.

Sean:
I’ll take that from San Jose fans only if they win the cup this year. Cuz Lord Stanley trumps all.

Keith:

Dear god they better not. It’s bad enough that Anaheim has a cup.

Sean:
Do you start Jones tomorrow?

Keith:

No. I start Jones after Quick lets in five in game two.

Sean:

Ha. Changes up front or on the blueline? Toffoli looked pretty ineffective. Greene was a minus 4.

Keith:
I think six D, sit Greene. Too slow. And definitely shake up lines.
