2014 Cup Run: Round 2, Game 1

After vanquishing archival San Jose, who next for the Los Angeles Kings? Interstate rival number two, the (formerly mighty) Ducks of Anaheim.

As we begin a new week in August, so too do we begin our review of a new playoff series, starting today with Game 1 of the Freeway Faceoff–the first ever meeting of these two teams in the postseason. Winner takes the crown of California, and the right to play the champion of the Central Division.

We pick up the text feed between Sean and Keith in the days between Round 1 and 2, then take it through Game 1. As is the case in this game and several others, one of us is at work, so the texts provide a nice kind of play-by-play.

Today’s link: Considering this series pits two Southern California teams together, it seems like this is a good time to plug the LA Times Sports section, which has surprisingly good hockey coverage. Helene Elliott, Lisa Dillman, and Lance Pugmire provided daily NHL coverage throughout the playoffs, and it is especially fun to go back and chart their assessments of the series from game to game.

Sean:

Fun fact: Frederik Anderson’s save percentage in the first round for the f___s is .892

Keith:

Is the Anderson – Hiller confusion a Stalock – Niemi redux?

Sean:

Honestly, it may be worse. Stalock is better than Anderson and Hiller is worse than Niemi. This is gonna be a great series.

Keith:

And then the whole Selanne controversy! I hope we get every coach we beat fired.

[Game time]

5:47pm

Keith:

What the ____ Quick!

Sean:

At work, need updates.

Keith:

Tied at one halfway through second.

Sean:

Lame

Keith:

Quick was way out of position on the goal against.

Weird game. Offense isn’t in sync.

7:14pm

Keith:

Quick missed poke check, Selanne makes it 2-1 with eleven minutes to go.

Sean:
_____ Selanne.

Watching now. I can’t ____ing stand Brian Hayward.

7:23pm

Keith:
____ Richards

7:40pm

Sean:

Marian g__ ___n Gaborik!!!!!!!

Keith:

About time he stepped up this game!

Is this team trying to make this year even more memorable than 2012!?

Sean:

Definitely more nail biting.

Keith:

We need more Toffoli.

Sean:

And less Selanne.

Keith:

Maybe courtesy of Pearson.

Can Boudreaux healthy scratch Selanne in the middle of the game?

8:18pm

Sean:

Could it be… Gaborik!!!!!!!!!

Keith:

That was one of the prettiest goals I’ve seen all playoffs. Unbelievable!

Sean:
CLUTCH

Keith:

That tying goal with seven seconds left made the trade undeniable genius. The OT goal to win it made the signing of him in the offseason unavoidable.

Sean:
Couldn’t agree more.

Keith:

Definitely was biting my nails there though. Especially early in OT.

Sean:

Gotta say, the Ducks look pretty good. This ain’t gonna be an easy series.

Keith:

I agree. And Hiller was solid. Though Quick could have played better.

Sean:

Quick did make some pretty spectacular saves though.

Keith:

Of course. On your pal Selanne.

Sean:

____ that guy.
