2014 Cup Run: Round 3, Game 2

Was Game 1 of Kings-Blackhawks an aberration, or the beginning of the end of this magical run? We shall see as the Western Conference Final–the Kings’ third in three years–moves to its second game.

Sean, Keith, Matt, and Ryan all chime in on the Game 2 text thread below.

(Also, keep your eyes peeled–or eyes open?–for a podcast episode that should be released shortly)

Today’s link: The Hockey News, which I frankly don’t know much about besides its Canadian origins (though isn’t the title pretty self-explanatory?), has some pithy, smart articles in their blog section. I have particular fondness for this Ken Campbell piece because it addresses a bias in hockey I can get really worked up about.

[pre-game]

5:15pm

Keith:

We watching boyos?

Sean:

You bet your ___.

[Game time]

5:41pm
Keith:

G__ _____t

7:13pm
Keith:

F___ yeah!

Matt:

Boo yeah!

Keith:

Come on

7:16pm

Matt:
Yes!!!!

Just scared my daughter.
Keith:

Boom!

Now as Sean would say…

Shut. It. Down!

Sean:

LOCK IT DOWN

Keith:

I was just praying for overtime. Now I need to retract those prayers

Matt:

Check you fools later. I just set up the DVR. It’s bath time!

Sean:

Get an extension cord and drag the TV into the bathroom!

Matt:

Haha great idea

7:28pm

Keith:

Wakey wakey Hawks.

Sean:

I got two words for you.

Keith:
What letter do they start with?

Sean:
If memory serves, T. They both start with T.

Keith:
How about “That 70s line”?

Sean:
I love it.

Keith:
Just love it?

Sean:
JMFC

Keith:

You know what this game needs? A Dustin Brown empty netter.

Holy s___. And four minutes to do it.

Fine then. MFJC hat trick will do.

Sean:

What is our goals per 60 avg for the playoffs??

Keith:
Highest. And getting higher.

I love how quiet that f_____g building is.

Sean:

After the end of the 1st, I never would have guessed we would score 6 unanswered goals. Not in a million years.

Keith:

Incredible.

I think Chicago forgot how it feels to lose at home.

And lose bad.
Sean:

Yeah. This is pretty brutal for them.

Keith:
Boo hoo.

Quite a blemish on that home ice record now for Blackhawks.

My mood about these playoffs completely shifted after that third goal.

Sean:

You’re telling me. I was totally pouting and glowering at Robin when she kept saying we could come back and win after the 2nd period.

Keith:

Robin I love you.

Is the manuscript of our playoff texts published yet?

Sean:

Not until Dustin Brown raises the cup at Staples Center ice again.

Keith:
What a roller coaster.

How does this game end in the same score as last game seven? Felt totally different.

Sean:

It was almost the total reverse of that game, in terms of the timing of our momentum and domination.

Keith:

You’re right.

So I think Jeff Carter is back. I believe his hat trick suddenly makes him second in playoff goals. But now this is the second game in a row Kopitar’s line was scoreless.

Sean:
But both Kopi and Gabby had assists, I think. But I get your point. But if the Hawks are focusing so much on the top line, then that gives Carter’s line room to play.

Keith:
True. Especially if our top lines cancel each other out. Then it becomes a question if we can keep Kane and their second line off the scoreboard.

So who looks meaner behind the bench: Quenville or McLellan?

Sean:

Quenville. When that guy loses his s___ it’s pretty scary.

Keith:

And or hilarious.

Sean:

I like it most when he wildly gesticulates.

[Post-game]

8:30pm

Matt:

Hell yeah!!!!!

Keith:

You’re back. All caught up?

Matt:

Carter-Toffoli-Pearson line gets me hard.

Big time

Keith:

And Richards-Williams-King had a sneaky good game

Matt:

Feeling pretty good. Wish we didn’t have to wait so long for Game 3.

Keith:

Seriously. Is it Saturday yet?

8:58pm

Ryan:

How about that f_____g third period, huh? Not that I watched it, since today was my daughters 3rd birthday. And I was all ready to say: GAME 3. SATURDAY NOON. NBC AT SOME BAR. But now my sister and her husband are coming to visit for the weekend, so I’m gonna have to miss out on games 3 and 4. BUT WE WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN, KEITH. We will make this happen. Game 5 is a week from today. I may have to work for the first half, but we gotta find a way. Hopefully we close it out in 5, but assuming we need game 6, that’s next Friday, which is a hell or high water kind of date for you and me.
