2014 Cup Run: Round 3, Game 3

Bringing it back home to LA for Kings-Blackhawks, Game 3, with the series tied 1-1.

The text message chatter between Sean, Keith, and Anthony really starts to pick up, so we’ll skip ahead to that.

Today’s link from SB Nation is included in the text thread! How convenient. But in case that isn’t enough, we refer you back to an earlier Grantland article we had shared, which was released around this time, because it’s just so great.

Keith:

But is there a stat to measure crazy faces after scoring? Cause his is up there. He does still make me nervous a lot.

Sean:

He’s also only 25 and logging heavy minutes against quality competition. And only making $1 mil.

Keith:

Yes, it’s true. I guess I just don’t know if I trust him on the top pairing yet. And I wonder if his offense might be more valuable with a stay home partner. I liked him with Voynov. But I’m not pushing for a change, like the way things are now.

Keith:

Would u line up kopitar v. Toews line?

Sean:

It’s a hard call because they’re shutting each other down, which is what you’d expect from two selke finalists. As much as I’d like to see kopi be totally dominant, if he has to play more defensively in order for us to win the series, then so be it.

Your thoughts?

Keith:

My understanding is that Sutter likes to start Kopitar based on zone (mostly offensive face offs ) rather than matching lines, using bottom lines in D zone. I think that approach works, since our bottom lines are good defensively and could shut down their top lines.

I think biggest the strategy is lining up That 70s Line against their weakest.

Sean:

It seemed to work out for us last game. But their weakest is still pretty f_____g good.

Keith:

Not as good as ours.

Do you keep Greene in?

[Pre-game]

10:25am

Sean:

I don’t change a thing about the line up.

Keith:

Did you hear rumors about the Gaborik extension?

Sean:

I did. Looks like it will be announced after the playoffs. What do you think is a good number/term?

Keith:

If it’s five per three years I think that’s awesome.

Sean:

Do we have to let any UFAs walk to afford that?

Keith:

Worse. I think we have to trade or buyout a veteran, unless the cap went way up.

Sean:

But both Greene and Mitchell could potentially come off the books, which would probably get us around $5mil. If you’re ok with letting them walk?

Keith:

I didn’t realize Greene was a free agent. And I’m pretty sure Lombardi wants Mitchell back.

I secretly want Stoll to have a great playoffs and pot some goals so we can trade him for a good, cheap stay home D man in the offseason.

Sean:

Stoll is having a great playoffs, just on the defensive checking side. He’s never going to score many goals, but he will be a great penalty killer and face off man.

Keith:

I know. Just overpaid, especially if Carter stays at center and Richards slides down. Sounds like they’re grooming Vey to replace him too.

[GAME TIME]

6:06pm

Sean:

Not a bad period. Gotta get the forecheck going.

Keith:

Not a good period either. Kopitar has got to step up to Toews.

6:29pm

Sean:

Tanner Pearson should just build a house behind the net and live there.

Keith:

Do you think we wears glasses for the eyes in the back of his head?

Sean:

Nah, those peepers are 20/20.

That 70s line strikes again.

Keith:

Now lock it down!

6:53pm

Keith:

So who scored that period?

Sean:

Carter and Toffoli.

Keith:

Umm, could you please answer the question in the form of awesome?

Jeff…

Sean:

MOTHER F_____G CARTER.

Keith:

And who scored after?

Sean:

Tyler “I got two words for you” Toffoli.

Keith:

There you go.

7:31pm

Sean:

I got two more words for you. And they both start with D.

Keith:

Awesome

Sean:

Carter is a beast. Toffoli is a maniac. Pearson is a machine.

Keith:

Maybe they should start making the storyline Toews v. Carter

[Post-game]

8:26pm

Anthony:

Keith:
