2014 Cup Run: Round 3, Game 7

The Kings and Blackhawks went to Game 7? In 2014? Involving Justin Williams?

Was anybody really surprised the Western Conference Final was decided in seven games (and overtime no less)? This, what many called the de facto Stanley Cup final, is also quickly being labeled one of the best conference finals (and best finishes) in NHL history.

That means that we had quite a lot to chatter about via text messages, as the feed below shows. Old friends and new friends of Kings of Kings chime in, whom we hope to feature on the podcast soon (such as Richard and Ryan). And, spoiler alert, we continued to talk about this game many days after it wrapped up.

Today’s link: Let’s toss this one to Chicago since it’s the last chance we’ll get–The Chicago Tribune previews this epic matchup in its sports section from a Blackhawks perspective. If this looks eerily familiar to LA fans and readers of the LA Times, you now know who the parent company of these papers is.

Keith:

Sigh. Well that was painful.

Gonna watch Sunday?

Ryan:
This is a game 7 team, Keith. I still like our chances. I’m definitely going to watch, but I may be doing it on a date with the wife.

[Game time]

7:34pm

Ryan:

This is breathless hockey.

Meaning every time Matt Greene is on the ice, I hold my breath.

Sean:

I’m not even watching and I’m shutting my pants.

Ryan:
Shut them pants up!!!

Just like LeBrun predicted at the start of the series: Game 7 headed to OT

SHUT UP THEM PANTS

I’m moving from beer to rye

Just to calm these old nerves

8:00pm

Keith:

So I just got off work. What did I miss?

Lebrun also picked the Hawks in OT so shut them pants!

Keith:

Sean:

Not one second. Gonna watch the entire replay of it tomorrow.

Ryan:

I caught it all live and in Technicolor.

Sean:

8:18pm

Anthony:

Suck a fatty, Chicago!!!!!

GKG!!!!

Keith:

Gahd!

Anthony:

!!!!

8:37pm

Anthony:

Now we can enjoy this moment….

Keith:

All of Game Six is forgiven

I’m going to now pretend that crazy ovation we were a part of was us at Game 7 shutting up all of Chicago.

In case you needed that moment in stereo

8:38pm

Richard:

The Kings did not take the easiest path to the finals.

Keith:

My heart is exhausted.

Welcome to the wild wild west

Richard:

That was such a good series.

I cannot see the finals measuring up, or putting as much stress on your heart.

Keith:

Yes. I can now agree since we won.

Richard:

Depends on how banged up the Kings are though

Keith:

But I did wonder what a more objective hockey fan thought of it, and I’m glad to hear you enjoyed.

I flew home for Game Six Friday and came back yesterday. That was a heartbreaker.

Richard:

Friday was tough. I thought they had that one.

Keith:

Who do you think looked better in this series?

Richard:

I think this has been one of the best series in a while. So intense, fast and skilled. Never a moment to relax.

Keith:

Yeah. I’m wondering if this will be looked back on in a decade as one of the best conference finals.

Richard:

I thought LA looked better. Did not catch all the games, but they looked to have an edge in what I saw.

Though they looked tired today.

This year has been weird. So many teams that you could make a case for going all the way, but almost all teams in the west.

Keith:

Right. And the only two contenders in the east bowing out in the second round.

Richard:

They did not look very good while getting eliminated too.

10:56pm

Keith:

So tell me your feelings right now.

Sean:

F_____g ecstatic.

Keith:

I want you to hold that feeling, keep it like a warm orb, and hold it against that little black pit of despair you had during game six.

Because we just knocked off the reigning champions, kicked the cup out of chitown, and are headed HOME to the finals.

12:21pm

Sean:
Courtesy of Robin:

A girl walks into a bar wearing a Hawks jersey. A guy walks up to her and says, “Hi, my name is Two Goal Lead, what’s yours?” She says, “What kind of name is Two Goal Lead?” He replies, “I figured anyone wearing a Hawks jersey would blow a Two Goal Lead.”

Keith:

Please tell me she made that up.

Have you seen this?

Sean:
Over and over and over again.

Keith:

There’s a great gif of the entire bench too that I’ve watched endlessly.

You know what one of the best parts of going to the Finals is?

Now there’s no other series for the media to get distracted by while the Kings quietly go about their world beating.
