Episode 11: Duck, Duck, Duck, Kings!

As the Roots sing: Duck down!

Continuing their August review of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Sean and Keith recap Round 2, when the Kings vanquished the Anaheim Ducks to take the throne of California.

They discuss lowlights (Gibson!), highlights (GIB SON!!), and of course, Dustin “Playoff” Penner.

2014 Cup Run: Round 2, Game 7

Game 7 between the Kings and Ducks–who will be crowned the Kings of California?

(Yes, this is a rhetorical question)

Check out our text thread to preview the game and follow the action along with us. Keith had the chance to watch the game with longtime friend (and friend of the podcast) Matt, who will be joining the thread soon.

Today’s link: We give a shout-out to another hockey podcast–Puck Podcast. Two Southern California friends, a Kings fan (Yay!) and Ducks fan (___), provide comprehensive weekly updates on all that is going on in the hockey world. Hence, the timely and appropriate recap they gave following the definitive outcome of this Round Two Freeway Faceoff.

8:21pm

Keith:

Trevor Lewis has more goals this series than Carter, Doughty, Kopitar, Brown, Williams.

Combined!

Sean:

But Kopi still has more points than anyone in the playoffs and Gabby has more goals. But Carter and Williams definitely need to step up. Brown was good last game.

Keith:

Not worried about Williams in game seven. Still wondering about Carter. And kind of gave up on Richards.

I’m so pissed that all the media cares about still is the Penguins and Bruins collapse, and previewing the boring East finals. We still have a f_____g game 7 here on the west coast s___heads!

Sean:

Totally. And I think the Kings still really haven’t gotten enough credit for the round one comeback. All those stories have been about the Sharks collapse instead of our 6 game winning streak. And Kopi still isn’t really getting the respect he deserves for being the league leader in points.

[Pre-game]

3:10pm

Keith:

So pumped. Is it six pm yet?

Sean:

I’m so pissed that I can’t watch the game! You gotta feed me updates.

Keith:
Ah man. Sure. My dad will be there live to provide between the glass updates as well.

You’ll never guess who I’m watching the game with tonight, after your brother bowed out.

Matt!

Sean:

AWW GAWD! SHO GOOD!
[Game time]

6:06pm

Keith:
Crap. Stuck on bus. Listening to stream, but battery is dying. You may need another update source.

Williams scores first goal on PP!

Sean:
Of course. OF COURSE JUSTIN WILLIAMS SCORES.

Keith:

He even called it!

[Post game]

8:55pm

Sean:

F___ yes!

Keith:

Ah gawd!

Sean:

Sho good!

Keith:

I hope you recorded that game Sean. You will want to watch it over and over. While chanting GIB SON

Ryan:

WHAT DID I TELL YOU KEITH?!?!?!

2014 Cup Run: Round 2, Game 6

We now enter Act Three of the three act play that is the Kings-Ducks playoff series: The Return of the King(s).

Games 3, 4, and 5 put us in a very dark place. But Game 6 would give us hope, as indicated below. Best of all, today’s thread brings the introduction of another member of our team: Ryan!

Today’s link: Jon Rosen has the job many of us dream of as LA Kings Insider. He writes pre-game, post-game, and off-season updates on a daily basis, including the series “Waking Up With The Kings,” which is not as creepy as it sounds.

[Pre-game]

4:59pm

Ryan:

I’m gonna try [to watch], but I’m working through the beginning of the game, so I probably won’t be able to hook up to watch.

Hopefully that is a good omen for us, as it will force us to hook up for Game 7.

Keith:

Ha ha, exactly

[Game time]

7:13pm

Keith:
Watching?
Sean:
Here with your dad!

You watching?

Keith:

Yeah. It’s a struggle to get it on bars here. But I had to work later.

Sean:
Tell them your dad said to put it on.

Keith:
Blech. Wretched power play.

Sean:
Yeah, but 5v5 has been pretty good.

Keith:

Agreed. Just no stopid penalties.

8:06pm

Keith:
GIB SON!

Sean:
What a soft goal. Let’s lock this s___ down now.

8:22pm

Keith:

Quick had to be there. But I’m liking our even strength pressure. Just no more penalties! (Or abysmal PP for that matter)

2014 Cup Run: Round 2, Game 5

Cut to the chase, since there’s not a lot to rave about for Kings-Ducks Game 5, as Sean and Keith indicate below.

Today’s link: Mayor’s Manor is another fine Kings hockey blog and podcast that we wanted to show some love towards. John “The Mayor” Hoven is often asked by other shows and media outlets to give his thoughts on the Kings and California’s teams, which he does in a more current podcast here.

7:31pm

Keith:

Damn the ducks. And damn NBC for its stupid layered coverage of these games.

Sean:
F___ that s___. Lewis makes it 1-1.

Keith:

F_____n’ third goal for him.

8:15pm

Keith:

Thoughts on period one?

Sean:
The ducks are forechecking machines. We are still having way too much trouble transitioning out of the zone. You?

8:19pm

Keith:

Stupid g__ __n penalty.

Ho s___.

Sean:
G__ _______ _____t.

Keith:
I feel like we dominated play for long stretches, but we just don’t generate dangerous chances. Especially on the rush. And they do in their limited chances. It’s like they score on every PP or odd man rush.

Look at that stupid, boring shotless entry.

Sean:
F___ it. I’m not watching anymore.

Keith:
Then I hope you missed that.
